How Much Does a Headshot Cost in Austin? What You're Really Paying For
Updated: 5 days ago
If you've searched for headshot prices in Austin, you've probably noticed the numbers are all over the place. One studio lists a session for under $200. Another advertises a headshot for close to $800. Personal branding sessions can run higher still.
Those prices aren't random. They usually reflect very different sessions. Here's what actually drives the cost, so you can compare photographers fairly and choose the right fit for how you'll use your photo.
The short answer
Based on what Austin photographers publish on their websites and in their ads this fall, most individual headshot sessions land somewhere between about $150 and $800. Personal branding sessions from established photographers can start around $1,500. Team headshots are often quoted per person or as a day rate for the whole group, so ask which one you're comparing.
The better question is what you get at each price.
What drives the cost
Time with the photographer
A 15-minute mini session and a full hour are two different things. More time means more outfits, more expressions and more chances to land the image you love. For a quick LinkedIn update, one look may be plenty. For a website, speaker bio or press kit, you'll want some variety.
Direction
Most people don't feel natural in front of a camera, and that's completely normal. A good photographer coaches your posture, angle and expression the whole way through. In my sessions, you see every image live on a monitor as we shoot, so we adjust together instead of hoping something works.

Lighting and setup
Professional lighting, backdrops and a controlled space produce light that is consistent and flattering. That consistency matters even more when a whole team needs to match on the company website.
How the images are priced
This is where quotes get confusing. Some photographers charge a low session fee and then add a fee for every final image. Others include all edited images in the session price. Before comparing two quotes, add up the total for the number of photos you actually plan to use.
Editing versus retouching
Ask what "edited" means. In my sessions, every image in your gallery is professionally edited for color, exposure and contrast. Detailed retouching, like skin, flyaways and stray hairs, is available as an add-on. Some photographers build retouching into a higher price and others charge per image. Either approach is fine as long as you know which one you're getting.
Turnaround time
If you need photos for a launch, a conference or a new role, delivery time matters. My headshot clients receive edited images within two business days after each session.
How you'll use the photos
A business headshot shows up everywhere: LinkedIn, your company site, press releases and speaker pages. Make sure the photographer's terms cover the ways you plan to use it.
Studio or on location?
Studio sessions give you controlled light and a clean, consistent background. On-location sessions show your workplace and your brand, like the restaurant setting in the photo at the top of this post. Location work often costs more because of travel and setup time. For teams, though, bringing the studio to your office can save money overall, because nobody has to leave work for long.

Questions to ask before you book
How long is the session, and how many outfit changes are included?
How many edited images do I receive, and is there a charge for each one?
What does editing include, and is retouching extra?
Will I see the photos during the shoot?
How soon will I receive my images?
Can I use them on my website, LinkedIn and in press materials?
Is a lower-priced headshot worth it?
Sometimes, yes. If you need a quick, clean photo for an internal directory, a budget option can do the job. But your headshot is often the first impression a client, recruiter or investor has of you. If it will live on your website and LinkedIn for the next few years, a session with real direction and polish is the better choice.
How I work
I've been behind the camera for more than 30 years and have run Photography by Mesh full time since 2016. Sessions happen in my Austin studio or on location at your office or business. You'll see your images on screen as we go, so you'll leave knowing exactly what you're getting.
Want to see how sessions work? My professional headshots page covers individual and team sessions, and Headshot Monday is a quick option when you just need one polished photo.
If you'd like a clear answer on what your session would cost, send me a note and tell me how you plan to use your photos. I'll put together a quote that fits.
